Grease Thickeners
Thickeners are essential to grease function
The three basic components of a modern grease consist of a fluid base oil, a thickener, and, in most cases, additives which offer a range of additional benefits. Typically, a grease might contain 85% base fluid, 10% thickener and 5% additives.
The combination and proportion of these components will determine the consistency, functionality, and operating conditions such as load, shear, and temperature.
Much of the advancement in overall grease technology can be attributed innovation in thickener technologies. In fact, the contribution of thickeners to this advancement has been so essential that many greases are classified by the type of thickener used.
