AXEL’s Prof. Johan Leckner and Johanna Larsson present a comparative investigation between simple lithium and anhydrous calcium greases: “Can Calcium Limit Lithium ReLiance?”
The main finding is that the performance of anhydrous calcium greases, up to 140°C, is at least equal, if not better, than simple lithium greases.
More specifically, anhydrous calcium greases have better mechanical stability, the thickener has inherent wear protection, and the performance in FE9 testing at 140 °C is superior. Anhydrous calcium greases also have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to simple lithium greases. None of the tests performed in the study provide any concern regarding replacing simple lithium greases with anhydrous calcium greases.
