Biodegradable lubricants of all types have been available for decades, but a combination of factors linked to poor performance, high cost and lack of incentive to use them has contributed to their limited growth as a product segment. Today, as improved technology has enhanced product performance and awareness of the urgent need to reduce our impact on the planet has grown, the time for change may finally have arrived.
Traditionally, lubricants for farming equipment have been developed primarily to protect moving metal components rather than for their environmental or toxicological impact. However, there is now increasing awareness that lubricants used on farming equipment are often lost to the environment which can in turn impact the food being cultivated. There is growing recognition that such lubricants should be formulated to reduce their impact on both the environment and the food even before it reaches the processing plants. An example of this equipment is a round baler or a large baler machine producing fresh bales of rolled up grass. The most common types of baler are rectangular or cylindrical.
This year the STLE annual meeting and exhibition was held in Nashville – Music city. The event offered more than 500 technical papers, education courses, market forums and a trade show, all related to the world of tribology and lubrication. In other words an excellent opportunity to get insight into technological advances, requirements and trends, meet peers within the industry and get information and ideas for future tasks. In spite of the lyrics from the household name Dolly Parton, the AXEL delegation, with members from the technical department and product management teams, spent considerable time to improve in addition to the stipulated 9 to 5 work hours.
On July 17 some details of various legal matters between AXEL Royal, LLC and the previous owners and some key employees of Royal Mfg Co LP. were published by an industry publication. As a normal practice AXEL does not and will not comment about details of ongoing legal issues, however we feel it is important to respond to certain elements of court filings.
AXEL has a history dating back more than 130 years, supplying high quality lubricating greases to some of the biggest companies in the world. Shortly after the acquisition we became aware of certain practices that were not aligned with AXEL standards and we immediately took action to discontinue any activities that would not meet our high expectations and values. The safety of our employees, the protection of our environment and the quality of our products are the foundation of our success, and we will not compromise these ideals.

On October 31, 2018, AXEL Christiernsson is celebrating its 130th anniversary. We have come a long way since 1888, when AXEL Abraham Christiernsson started the company in Stockholm, Sweden to produce a mix of lubricants and other chemical/technical products.
Jeff St. Aubin has been hired as Technical Director for AXEL’s grease operations in USA, replacing previous Director, Anoop Kumar at AXEL Royal.
